A large volcanic outburst blasted away the entire eastern flank of the mountain around 250 000 years ago, leaving it with the peculiar aspect it retains today. The ascent of Mt Meru travels through a variety of plant zones. The lower region’s dry forest gives way to a lush mountain rainforest, which subsequently becomes scrubland. The vegetation comprises of heath and moorland at the summit of the mountain, before being replaced by the spectacular barren alpine deserts. As the flora changes, so does the wildlife, which is both diverse and magnificent. During the ascent, you will frequently see large game like as elephants and buffalos, but leopards are also a possibility. As a result, you must be escorted on your tour by an armed park ranger.
